Posted: 11 Sep 2012 03:43 AM PDT I'm reapplying (dentistry) as I didn't get an interview last year. I was told the reason I didn't get an interview was lack of voluntary work, which hopefully I have now addressed. So, this would indicate there was no overall issue with my PS so do you think it is worth rewriting or just a bit of tweaking to include and reflect on voluntary work? Thanks
Posted: 10 Sep 2012 05:23 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to organise my Senior elective in Cuba for next summer and I am not having much luck so far. Was wondering if there is anyone who have done this before and possibly has a contact or any feedback of the experience? Thanks
2013 Graduate & International Entry HELP! Posted: 10 Sep 2012 03:30 PM PDT Hello everyone, I just discovered this amazing forum (sadly, a little late) and I have so many questions regarding my application. Background: I am an international student currently studying my final year at a university in the USA. I am majoring in Economics, but am also on the pre-med track, which includes 1 year of biology, 1 year of chemistry, 1 year of organic chemistry, 1 year of maths, and 1 year of physics. In addition to these, I have taken epidemiology, biochemistry of cells and organisms, and am currently taking human physiology. I am scheduled to take the UKCAT on Oct. 2, so I don't have any of those grades to report yet. I am not taking the BMAT or the GAMSAT. I posted a similar thread in the International Students forum, but the questions are different. If you wouldn't mind looking at it and helping me answer a few questions, I would be SO appreciative. Link: http://www.newmediamedicine.com/foru...tml#post789010 Questions: 1) How long did you know the person you asked to write your reference? 2) What is the expected length of time you are supposed to know the person writing your reference? 3) Is it bad to have a reference written by a non-science professor (e.g. Economics?) 4) Does the UCAS have any place (other than the personal statement) for things like attachments or community service? 5) Is it bad to have a reference written by someone who isn't a professor (e.g. a PhD or Masters student? 6) Is it bad to have a reference written by someone who taught you a summer course only? THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYBODY! I look forward to hearing back from all of you!

Background: I am an international student currently studying my final year at a university in the USA. I am majoring in Economics, but am also on the pre-med track, which includes 1 year of biology, 1 year of chemistry, 1 year of organic chemistry, 1 year of maths, and 1 year of physics. I am scheduled to take the UKCAT on Oct. 2, so I don't have any of those grades to report yet. I am not taking the BMAT or the GAMSAT. Questions: 1) Are the 4-year graduate entry programs offered to international students open to only those who have been living in the UK for a period of time? 2) Given my circumstances, does applying to 5-year programs seem like a better idea? 3) Which schools do you know of accept international students to their graduate programs? (I've found a few, but I want to make sure I'm not missing any.) 4) How important is the usage of British English spelling in the personal statement? E.g. color vs colour 5) Who did you find to write your reference? The expectations are very strange to me, as most university students in the US do not know their professors for more than a year. However, there seems to be an expectation to find a person who has known/taught you for more than a year...which brings me to the next question 6) If I find someone who has taught me for less than a year (7 weeks - 14 weeks), would that be looked down upon? THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYONE! I look forward to all the replies! :) |
Advice needed about applying to GEM course at Cambridge. Posted: 10 Sep 2012 02:48 PM PDT Hi there. Basically I'm really in need of some advice about applying for the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme at Cambridge. I am currently working towards an Honous Degree with the Open University and havee 2 more modules to complete. Once these are done (finish in March) I will have my degree. I am aiming for a 1st but should be able to gain a 2:1 as a minimum. As far as academic grades are concerned; GCSEs; 4A* A 2B A-Levels (2006); A(Biology) A(Maths) B(Chemistry) b (AS French). I understand Cambridge want A-Level Chemistry to have been completed within 7 years of admission and my grade falls within the deadline. However, I understand that Cambridge will accept an OU Science Module entitled "The Molecular World" in place of A-level Chemistry. should I find myself in a position to reapply next year, I will do that module then. I can't undertake it right now due to having a lot on my plate completing my Honours degree and also work committments and the cost of funding this extra module. As far as work experience is concerned I've quite a lot of work experience over the years dating back to 2004 including; - Shadowing in Hospital for several weeks in each department; A&E, Adult Medicine, Paediatrics - GP surgery - Palliative Care - Shadowing in a centre which treats severe Epilepsy - Voluntary work at a Hospice and Care Home. Other work experiences; - Voluntary work at the 2002 commonwealth games - Voluntary work as a Team Leader Games Maker at the 2012 Olympics. - Paid staff at 2012 Olympics. - Olympic Ambassador in Manchester. - Voluntary work with Ausstralian Olympic Swimming Team, Brazil and Thailand Paralympic teams at their training camps (as an ambassador). Extra-curriculars; - Played American Football for local city team in the national amateur league. - Play volleyball for local team in regional league. -Play English billiards. - Practice Martial Arts; Karate and Jeet Kune Do - Won numerous awards at national level for volunteering. My concern is that most of my work experience has been done over a long period of time and the only recent work experiences I have done are shadowing my GP on a weekly basis and regularly working at the same Hospice for almost 10 years. I just wanted some advice and input on how I could make my application stronger and any hints or tips for the additional personal statements we need to write on the additional form for Graduate Medicine? I fear that my academics might drag me down as my A-Levels are not fantastic and without the grade to hand in my degree, it makes it tricky to argue a convincing case especially given that Cambridge don't ask for the BMAT for graduate Medicine. Should I be unsuccessful in 2013 entry I will reapply for admission in 2014 hopefully with a 1st or 2:1 to end, stronger work experience, undertaking the OU module in The Molecular World and possibly enrolling onto a Master's programme for 2013-2014 possibly at a good University in the US. I'm really passionate about studying Medicine and at Cambridge and would really appreciate any feedback or advice anyone could offer to me regarding a potential application. Many thanks in advance. Bane.
Glasgow and St Andrews UKCAT Cut-off? Posted: 10 Sep 2012 01:16 PM PDT I've just sat my UKCAT and got 2560 (av. 640 :( ) I was hoping to apply to St Andrews and Glasgow and I know that they have cut off scores. Does anybody know what their cut-offs for 2012 entry were? And I'm guessing it's best to avoid Edinburgh with a score like mine? Thank you!
