Answers: Round up/down and calculation of GAMSAT grade

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 03:08 AM PDT

Recently I enquired about what the policy of rounding up/down was and how GAMSAT was calculated for interview - I received the following response and thought I might share in case anyone was wondering the same as there has been much confusion about this in the past.

+ All GAMSAT scores are rounded up or down as appropriate and .5 is round up.

+ We calculate scores using a slightly different formula to the GAMSAT:

Overall Score = (Section I + Section II + Section III) / 3

Candidates are selected for interview on the basis of the higher of their two overall scores.

Hope that helps

Gradmed notes wanted... from Singapore...

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:49 PM PDT

Hi guys, not sure if this is the correct place to post, but i'm looking for a complete set of gradmed notes. I emailed the gradmed staff but they could not sign me on the course/ send me any notes.
I hope i can acquire a set of notes from someone here, but the seller must be willing to post them to Singapore. I will be paying for the postage (of course). My friend who is in the UK currently will be able to bank the money to you as well.

Thanks in advance! and really appreciate for the help as I am unable to get myself to the UK for the course.

2:2 Doom

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 06:52 PM PDT

Hello!

I've just graduated with an (unplanned) 2:2 in a life science degree - initially I was pretty resigned that medicine was off the table, but now that I've had a few months to get my brain together, I realise that I could at least still apply to George's and Nottingham...

I was going to apply for graduate nursing at King's in the meantime to at least keep me busy in a clinical environment and have some sort of a back-up if I never get in to grad med. Whilst I know that I'd much rather medicine over nursing, will med schools look poorly on this decision (and think that I don't know the difference between the two)? I cant tell if I'm making a potentially idiotic decision or not, any advice thrown my way would be much appreciated!

6 years medicine course (foundation year included)

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 02:21 PM PDT

Hi everyone!!

I have recently heard that it is easier to get into the medicine course which includes a foundation year, giving a total of 6 years, rather than the usual A100 medicine course, which takes only 5 years. Is it true?

A Master Class in Orthopaedics

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:43 PM PDT

I hope this doesn't get deleted as I don't believe I am breaching any rules.

Warrington Hospital are putting on a free one day course for all students and junior doctors interested in Orthopaedics on Saturday 22nd of this month (september) at the Halton Hospital site. It will be ran by Orthopaedic, anaesthetic and radiology consultants as well as trainees. For more information please either post here or find us on facebook.

Whilst future courses may cost money this one is being ran free and offered to anyone who registers. I hope forum readers will find this useful.

Taking a year out of medical school

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:15 PM PDT

Has anyone had a year out part-way through medical school? If so what did you do? Something medicine related or completely not medicine-related? Did you it affect your commitment to medicine? Do you think it's a good idea to avoid burnout? Did you miss your peer group when you returned?

42 IB points : Oxf. or Cam. + which London unis + what to do with little experience

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 10:31 AM PDT

Hi!
First of all, I'm not sure if its the best subforum, please move it if there was a better choice.
I am a May '12 IB graduate, i scored 42 points with HL English A2, Physics, Mathematics and SL Polish, Economics and Spanish ab initio.
In January of my senior year I decided to study medicine and so I am studying HL Biology and Chemistry this year and writing the exams during the May '13 session.

I want to apply to Oxbridge but I have some doubts regarding the BMAT. The problem is that some question are science based while I haven't studied biology or chemistry for two years now, and by the time of writing the test I will have studied them for two months only. Do you think I stand a chance to do well and its worth trying? Being unsecure about my BMAT score, is it possible to say which of the two schools relies on it less?

The remaining three choices are UKCAT schools.
The second one will be Edinburgh, because I think I would like to live there and the schools is excellent.

The other two schools will be in London: Queen Mary, King's College or St. George's. Now, I don't know what criteria I could use to choose the one I won't apply to. St. George's requirements don't seem to be very demanding, is it a decent school?

And the last issue is my experience. As an IB graduate, I did CAS, but not medical at all. For two years, every week I would spend time playing and studying with a young boy living in a poor neighbourhood without his father or siblings. I think it may show my commitment or compassion, but isn't it too remote from medical experience? My parents are doctors and I have some short reflections about the job, as I e.g. took part in a surgical conference with my dad. I am also planning to do some shadowing with them in their hospitals.
Should I desperately look for some medical voluntary work? Do the tutors expect months or years of shadowing?

I am sorry for writing such a lengthy post and maybe I expect too much help, but if you could adress any of the issues I mentioned, it would be fantastic :)

UKCAT and foundation courses

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 09:38 AM PDT

Hey guys, I hope you have either gained good UKCAT scores, or your studies are going well.

I am a Lancaster Uni Business grad (2.1.) and have no science A Levels. I have recently enrolled on evening AS Level Bio/Chem courses, which, as long as I don't complete to the whole A Level, means I'm eligible for the Foundation courses.

I'm hoping to apply for Southampton and Warwick GEP, but of course, if I don't get a very good UKCAT, then I'll be applying to..

Southampton GEP
Manchester 6 year
Dundee 6 year
Keele 6 year

Does anyone know how the foundation courses use the UKCAT for graduates?

Before anyone mentions funding, I will fortunately be in a position to fund the 6 year course (just), and therefore that isn't a huge issue.

Graduates taking the BMAT

Hi,
Just wondering whether there are any graduates out there taking the BMAT this November. I am a biology student so slightly forgotten most of the Chemistry and haven't done most of the physics since GCSE! What are people doing to revise!!!

I have no idea what to make of my UKCAT score

VR: 520

AR: 630

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 04:39 AM PDT

i really wanted to do daignostic radiography.. guys couldnt get into it.. luckily got into bioscience course(applied sciences) at lsbu.
the course is a 4 year extended degree programme so first year is a prepartory year if i do well second year can choose what degree programme in that field ill likee to specialise in.

since first year is a prepatory year do you think i can then transfer into first year radiography course (allied health science)?// its way interestings
im a twin too and my sis is doing sociology and criminology and my parents are taking the loans and stuff for both , so if i get into radiography(nhs covered) would be cheaper i guess.

Lots of Gamsat materials available: Gradmed, Des O'Neil, Medired, Ozimed...

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 04:08 AM PDT

Hello all,

I have lots of Gamsat material available, which helped me score 68 in Gamsat.

As follows:

- GradMed full-length books from full-length (not the short one!) course, includes:
Physical Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Biology
Physics
Maths for Science
Essay-writing
NB some of these have my annotations in but these should help not hinder - they mostly just highlight the most important bits as per the Gradmed teacher's instructions!

- Des O'Neill: extensive mix of science and sections 1 and 2 guidance including essays

- Ozimed: 5 full practice tests

- MediRed: Chem/Bio guidance (118 pages), Essay guidance (62 pages), Physics (72 pages)

- MedPrep: Poetry/prose guidance; Bio/Chem/Physics guidance; 2 sample tests

- ALSO Kaplan MCAT: excellent for section 1 and 3 Gamsat practice: includes full-length tests, LOADS of individual sciences tests, LOADS of verbal reasoning tests (great for section 1).

In addition I have lots of other shorter parts on various things - e.g. maths, essay tips - which I can throw in too.

ALL apart from GradMed's books are emailable immediately.
I could send the GradMed books by recorded post for next-day delivery in the UK.

Available in parts or as a whole; get in touch if you're interested or would like any more details! :)
