How do the same "independent" sources pop up in competing stories? [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNGcmuEhY1C6a1EAY67e-IdSFdazOphK8SL6flDvmbZmARI5Du9t517VrOydhOPbUpjCZrxIPb3YbV72e2RKu0qtlxDcKlm9-Z7hCrQWl8_5BN6rqkC1HNmzpdTt-ISP1Dt7f4zF1NAxn7A9c-Xqxu3sn3VcMsLnkmbVcrBBG5Uiky2Pn55Vov1zNMgkVFS8Wuf4Gf6QHiqkzUU9PAIyJSavZVKq11B9fli0hcGdtokOJduwcFkzErn-USrgNyNLEqKxHKjcryXbV0Y9qKEmXw-L8KggYC8Ax4j7o7LxAGo3lQ==]
Or, is this the scientific embargo version of insider trading? [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNGcmuEhY1C6a1EAY67e-IdSFdazOphK8SL6flDvmbZmARI5Du9t517VrOydhOPbUpjCZrxIPb3YbV72e2RKu0qtlxDcKlm9-Z7hCrQWl8_5BN6rqkC1HNmzpdTt-ISP1Dt7f4zF1NAxn7A9c-Xqxu3sn3VcMsLnkmbVcrBBG5Uiky2Pn55Vov1zNMgkVFS8Wuf4Gf6QHiqkzUU9PAIyJSavZVKq11B9fli0hcGdtokOJduwcFkzErn-USrgNyNLEqKxHKjcryXbV0Y9qKEmXw-L8KggYC8Ax4j7o7LxAGo3lQ==]

Recently, while analyzing several stories on the same study, we noted that the
same "independent" expert showed up in two stories. We wondered how/why that would
be. The Embargo Watch blog helps solve the mystery.

Five year survival rates can mislead - message to medical educators, medical journals,
journalists and the public [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNFhb5GUuBa0DSZzBoHUstKyqBBe0jP4KSHbzS2qJ1Nur5aNWYaJGW6ykvXG_jxQcLarQn2ruDv8Kb56ZWEtVMyRd2egQRWJ9l_LPtcbLIfpSSoT_e2o6F5RzmXDU9XZEKSR2lIKas2dsE-ZWf-AhHmnCkRavtfMjMDyiOHht77vEFdfqfPf4QGrTUBEQnyRTtQenLC4w9IUYVbI_8W36N3gz6gosH7Aw8igluo5neTsLBxMf1C00olvv5xHIR_BtCkLPs9kGHZVK0HK-wL4WT5d]

Professor Gerd Gigerenzer of the Max Planck Institute in Berlin published an
article in the BMJ, "Five year survival rates can mislead." It's a statistical
maneuver we've heard from Rudy Giuliani and from the Komen Foundation.

* Some local journalists trumpet breast cancer "breakthrough" that gets little attention
elsewhere [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNHg5GfPS2uC0-PrilUdg0PlOl-QIxfRGnN13UVty81W6DmJViA0zoOogq_CXr43y1PXvJmUk23WJs4xIul069rlJcVsTwz1UMc73yemWO1jdYrx4GmG9QHwJJ4dzYZr9frWlhVFbow2SeQOZRchC1QMwQyzodn3YDl4HUoYqKUZWir5ELWcIoc6SyLCJCMRySL4QhFsKkkZeG0AfP9xEOvLPRLT539YwF-99hEJNRyoiPDtpWdGxYlaTRsvL86qnGc=]

I live in the Twin Cities, so I couldn't avoid hearing about the University of
Minnesota research paper in Nature, "APOBEC3B is an enzymatic source of mutation
in breast cancer." Had I lived anywhere else, I probably wouldn't have heard
anything about this pre-clinical, laboratory finding.

David Healy's depressing reflection on 25th anniversary of Prozac & SSRIs for depression
[http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNG6WwiCJ-p7YJYxb8IDkZTHytCbLodIbMHB61Fk47zbXyNV53F-hIisvB_rOm7Bn6nBXLCzsueF4-J7vrq_jvWfa4H1h4XCrv45_zUe0wSv1H-ENlMuVrCpcz1bLtzhbGVAWvZx2wkg_3-nGRsxu9NzeBctI6C4ce0QAdTQGCFtvE9eo0LZlee9IL1aFfqwbcX1RMmpnT_w-0acG4eVAMjssbWObY7ybnmO8HaFZzO_FDX7N31OxaAH]

Psychiatrist-author David Healy blogs about: the phenomenal explosion in the use
of antidepressants, suicides triggered by antidepressant use, birth defects and
miscarriages from antidepressants used in pregnancy, and what antidepressant prescribing
has done to the practice of medicine and to cognitive behavioral therapy.

An update on how we die in the U.S. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNGQ2rY7mJRwCRKB--NrV7D4YX6eKnVm-fte3b6F1vMdJ6WxLzCmMvHDwV42KI7OuHzEL1dGrPyKhvquAWyYAHBI6IG2aKPWDmnWyv44odvhoPcTZC0LPmg1Sky_--LwG9gnej4p-19aStIVxWo8LPuzD_ryFTJHAtTbnM3RQ6kIZp2m7OV3wxGJ]
Study points to increased hospice use, but also raises questions about whether patients'
wishes are being honored.

This public radio program in Indiana interviewed me in response to the paper
by John Ioannidis and colleagues in JAMA, "Empirical Evaluation of Very Large
Treatment Effects of Medical Interventions." You can listen to the 12-minute segment

El periodismo biomédico en la era 2.0 - publication from Barcelona international
symposium [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNH3oSuzHHktrqDt3imCJhNVP7YvkpDm2joQz8mRoG-ojvKZZugr863O3eS_DILmlal7QycYFhxsSEMjWxa_QsfCyGduO7pRxYuQzAAO6MtJl3ZiFtqXFQXaguasMXBE-kGvPnDfCmiwO7llNqBsuIey0acLzfau8BjMGXppyyss_CpNHcayKXUXhfa71ceACb2wXFSRF3QaXrj7xDnbm3bVZbyikoW5-cNcAzvNn9jC2FtpPA3p3NaQDdX36Gow6dA=]

"El periodismo biomédico en la era 2.0" is the title of a booklet based on
presentations at a 2011 International conference in Barcelona which has now been
published and is available online, with pdf files of talks from speakers from Spain,
the UK, Germany and the US - including mine on "Is all published health care news
actually newsworthy?"

How well did these stories address our 10 criteria?
We analyzed two stories on the same study of fats in the diet. Our reviewers weren't
thrilled with either story, for different reasons. Ready why.

Omega-6 Fats Linked to Increased Risk of Heart Disease [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNEkdnq-7FSNSlV_7YK15YMAh5Uv9OhqnrzywcTejFsWZ_Qd0L9hFr-Ymq2OHci17N9Bf3LmNJatcPFqg7Iq_08U1CnnwGYdxM1jeQgN7dI7wDh9dLFiTkwH9qwk8vM6f5xjrwGykKU0qx_qqaVyDAy9aOevNl9Il8seUtW3pyU9fOcAPbR0uZLN9RsRpBqY7AugcWk6_UXllA==]

Better in some respects than the competing HealthDay coverage, but worse in others.
Neither story got at the heart of why this study is important.

Re-Analysis Refutes Diet Guidelines Favoring Vegetable Fats [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001DpfDG2YuuNGhW34zYGK40OWMt3H64E8jhbJ2z890mhmfvTL1YwzC-pcg8yoa4niLvJ9jpuUwR4NLHJTZ3x_kaK1fWCKg6iz4b74IsKkFQO2Pn9nom6Ev54uKX2o7scNaS7C_vfIDN02xQK_vgcRdEmXm38pAy523JL4VI8vvlHu-PI3Nj5_r3rxglUQkcdguA1Rv1JgvimgBjGueWZCoafsgUiKGoa_q]

This story attempted to address some complicated nutrition science, but didn't quite
measure up. TIME's report was similar.
