A little advice needed ITT: loads of questions! Posted: 06 Feb 2013 08:28 PM PST Hi all, Allow me to introduce myself, my name's Ross. 21 on the 16th of this month :D - I've been seriously considering a career in the NHS for the past 2 years, however - wrong choice of A-levels (Politics, Law and Sociology) has prevented me from directly applying to Medical School. I've just quit an apprenticeship in Accountancy, working in an office is painful, I cannot do it. I want to be able to be on my feet, helping people and facing new challenges every day. I recently begun applying for universities to study BSc Adult Nursing, but just found out that a 2nd university has rejected my application, upon asking why. I found out I don't have enough work experience (Trust me, I've looked, and found it very difficult to find any work). I wanted to study Nursing so I could use the degree to study Medicine via GEM. But now this is beginning to look unlikely, and I am seriously questioning what to do. I was reading the Brighton & Sussex Medical School entry requirements out of curiosity, and found that Sussex Downs college offers an 'Access to Medicine' course. Upon speaking to my parents who I still live with, they said they'd support me in my decision to apply, but I thought why not ask medical students/applicants what they though as well. (If TL;DR,ápologies) 1) Whilst they're recognised, are Access to Medicine courses worth the money? I have to take out a loan that's repayable immediately after finishing the course lumping me with debt before I even start my degree 2) What's the percentages of applicants to Med-Schools using A2M? 3) Does anyone have any experience of these courses? 4) Would I be better off getting work experience within a healthcare environment, then reapplying for Adult Nursing? 5) I only have Cs in Science and Maths at GCSE, but have A-levels and had been doing an AAT apprenticeship, would they consider these factors in my application? I would really appreciate some advice, and apologies if there's lots of text. I like to explain my situation, and unfortunately that often requires some explanation. Thank you for your time. Ross.
Posted: 06 Feb 2013 03:37 PM PST I'm looking to sell my GAMSAT notes that I used for this year's exam. I got overall 70 with these books so studying from these should be enough. I went to the Gradmed full course and am selling the complete notes. There are 8 booklets which cover organic chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, biology, verbal reasoning, written communication, lots and lots of simulated gamsat questions and tests with detailed answers along with all the extra questions/explanations they gave to us during the course! The books do have some highlighting/annotations and explanations which I jotted down from the teachers and could prove beneficial. The Gradmed course did cost me in excess of £2500 so I think £300 ONO is a reasonable price. I will also include two recommended GAMSAT books which prove quite useful in providing background knowledge for sections 1 and 2. 1- Essays by George Orwell (I would definitely recommend this to anyone who need to improve on their essay writing skills. It has a range of essays on a number of topics and is very useful!) - 2- Break blow burn by Camille Paglia (This book was totally awesome especially for section 1 where you are given extracts of poems and have to analyse meaning, the book has a range of poems with indepth explanation) I am looking to sell the whole lot in bulk so please PM me. I also have the Griffiths GAMSAT review book which is a MUST READ for understanding the actual GAMSAT exam! Literally it provides an extensive background of the test and is filled with a lot of useful tips to help you succeed- I would defo recommend reading this before starting any revision just so you have an idea about the exam!! ~ £20 There are also 2 ACER gamsat papers for £10 Feel free to PM for further details.
Posted: 06 Feb 2013 11:27 AM PST Selling the KAPLAN UKCAT guide. The course cost £300 for couple of days. They will go through this book and discuss, which I'm sure one can easily figure out. It helped me and I hope it will help you too. I also have the 5 practise book and can get them to you very quick. Willing to negotiate.
