Weekly digest - March 18, 2013
news about the myriad messages about health care interventions flooding Americans
daily
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Boston was a great venue for the 15th annual Association of Health Care Journalists
conference. For the workshop that I helped lead on how to report on medical studies,
I tried to appeal to visual learners, hitting on themes of:
*
Hitler parody - surrogates [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidrxQWE8VtkEaH3try4cph7puo6Zpk4KbHXjfBG_YfrZejvosKsRYv4BcC6lzJiysWe2DdSqfvSMZrf7d7abHttXfbNrrtmlchJmrhjbyUgQFo4Ri2c29HbLoe5i8qWTicDM0ik_uDK5GlfQ_11kk9QiD7JK1x6D2wna5HMwHa3WAoMbbYSxLhc1fk833tF9w8FxqMfJtdp_LA==]
From YouTube "Downfall" parody -
The Surrogate Battle: is lower always better? [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidoR-atu4eNuENN_Uu-Op1L09vkSHa94mwby_SNLUMkQDdLQUCVUpM5qOZPnVoxSh0uARN75pG780upocF0lFPE_cb8z-asDcrk9LSBtI32JjqVratlgFtkp7d0rY1FtAceWhh5Murd96Q==]
Hitler
* birds, bears & turtles
* trains
* coupons
* roosters
* Moses
* firehoses
* scales of justice
* mirrors
To see how these tie together, you'll have to see my slides. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidrxQWE8VtkEaH3try4cph7puo6Zpk4KbHXjfBG_YfrZejvosKsRYv4BcC6lzJiysWe2DdSqfvSMZrf7d7abHttXfbNrrtmlchJmrhjbyUgQFo4Ri2c29HbLoe5i8qWTicDM0ik_uDK5GlfQ_11kk9QiD7JK1x6D2wna5HMwHa3WAoMbbYSxLhc1fk833tF9w8FxqMfJtdp_LA==]
My co-workshop leader, Ivan Oransky, took the angle of how journalists can stay
out of trouble & how not to get things wrong. You can see his slides, too.
At that same AHCJ conference, the organization announced a new website - hospitalinspections.org
[http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidrIpDdn6pL66p5hct2YMQYlYDvIdgfMoU3395y2_h9B7V72RmOaU_6MFQsvNdkGzffXr-4UnesaLJCCRowgGMxkYolocQpS1eoajj9FHvjGGPJBvybR6Zdn_d0blWq6Z2QY5r1758YBdoFQ9M-MgXspRPQu8JsNubDlEENKfdhl1HXectcJxbXp]
- which "aims to make federal hospital inspection reports easier to access, search
and analyze." You can read about many of the AHCJ conference sessions on the organization's
blog. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidqvg_GlIipMMORyQBUIsrNSeZQ2cp_Y_vl-M0rFkP8lVd6IE-TLZLa2qFlFMka-vbsSt--MPtnAzTSQTqQxJPOJQZlOaVfKL-8T2aSKMyDKsqL-WCrPq34n]
Other things we wrote about last week:
*
Another bad example of reporting on robotic surgery [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidr2hBy51O9lGaZCQzlR8D2sDsd4jD9DXDcwR547w91IK9QNH1_mDSKUd216qRfEYqc0ZMT6H_am5GlBWOqOheylm6_hyuaLG6iUeyL36ko8O5CyswGRGrrWl8yPGh5GoUTeOG9AO56L6XpKAwUtLYgUVkg_iUgUNKECw8LiQcVDQjv3RfdprJ_7t-DJqXzxa5TwPfthephfHg==]
The surgeon who blogs and tweets as The Skeptical Scalpel (@Skepticscalpel [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidrgBiC1jT-GXLOoicRv8SU7DbzysQj5fBggsi6zgm8dy7ZA7iyfZN4Qpi26mikQnd5eszbXNV4TfXfDXoMXntumWfdl5_-1yvcoyk65f0ofCSshPJEt6rq_])
Tweeted: "Houston Chronicle's hard-hitting exposé on robotic surgery." You have
to know his work and his style to know that he was being sarcastic about "hard
hitting exposé."
*
Two days later, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released
a statement on robotic surgery [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidqr2DxroA3iGoWjg-f-znkWA2HnrwyqJJBTWEw5B0bTZ39wG7AQNosYpC9krPIer7CzJlbS8-z9-0hONMP8JSmBPP2swso2HTpwX3zX112ew1DgaSjxnpxiRaZ7o2o3Xwoh07LZZ94IEjgIYjPZ66ThIQ3B9ELydFTFf7D7Oin2XanwuvXFqhcw_fxOgXiUx9E=]
that concluded: "Aggressive direct-to-consumer marketing of the latest medical
technologies may mislead the public into believing that they are the best choice."
*
A good example of how to report on an observational study [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidpdTQjOzE6EvQ12LZMnc7L7TvpkR2uxUwoBCP4mUa8q0hMrRTh9HF17xFox-E2OnE5sjbO2cue5EKf0MwDxnySIKor2-rPH8l_ou7oydgJNf2coVPVwBONn6lZ4sZ5JDWXZ1DHgux6a6dLqAF3nhyN2PM5QQZGXtT9pLDsuxoxnViCDCTe64en2_o-44OBrDdo58XurbHFoghr3-gHcaMLh]
NPR's Richard Knox has been around the block a few times - a veteran science journalist.
And it shows in the way he covered a study pointing to an association - women
who took aspirin had fewer diagnoses of melanoma. Emphasis on association, not
causation.
* Read about the tangled mess of news release, broken embargo, and confusion over
heart device data at the big American College of Cardiology scientific sessions
in San Francisco [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001_jgBazCVidohA7Xn0WGMREUczSlaJj3Zl_7Rm7Vkg5RnV1vkOhtw5huP7D5J7coiwMVPv0OjC9G51f4XS-tWYAY3N128_B_nZLRaPcWLE4SoUDLggShHnm5YFN2KcFy1B5kJyX12oNFjvVvZnEmAh8lGBqro0gFvOhVQK57V5YAL2hJxHAoxYTjWiA2L8lp5Nt9U3MdICxYGKH14U-n8SxgAjsYG8vflHRA-FuqGIoeVwUw_Kr0es2-Cz2nPSGKN05E8lvkolWI=].
Not a pretty chapter in the way research news is disseminated to the public.
