Ellie goes to Medical School

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 04:12 PM PDT

Dear everybody,

I have rather indulgently started a blog. Since I have not yet started medical school it has, at best, a limited ability to entertain or inform. Mostly its just me going on and on about my day. Have I sold it to you yet?

Here's the link: Ellie goes to Medical School | A Graduate Entry medical student goes on and on about her life

I promise that in the near future it will have content that is firmly centered on all things medical. In the mean time I cover such exciting topics as quitting my job, going abroad, and a dazzling array of anxiety dreams which may well make you question why I got a place.

Comments of every sort are of course welcomed :)

HYMS vs UEA

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

I'm extremely happy to have received two unconditional offers this year for medicine, one from the University of East Anglia and one from Hull York Medical School.

However, I'm faced with a bit of a dilemma! Having received two offers, I now have to decide where I'd like to firm. With me having unconditional offers, I'm unable to insurance one of my offers, so I have to pick one and stick with it.

Both courses are very similar, offering PBL, plenaries, early patient contact, etc. I think the fact that the courses are SO similar makes the decision even harder than if they differed by a larger amount.

I have visited Hull Medical School, York Medical School and UEA Medical School but I'm still finding it extremely hard to make the decision. The fact that I live quite close to the Hull Medical School puts me off applying for HYMS quite a bit as I want to move further away. However, the fact that Norwich is just so far also puts me off... So distance-wise, they both have major negatives in terms of what I want. I found the people at UEA to be very friendly. I'd say a major difference between HYMS and UEA is that in phase two of HYMS, you move to different towns to undertake placements, but at UEA you stay on campus and therefore UEA spends more time doing lectures at the university within years three and four.

Just wondering if anyone could help? Anyone had any experiences of the two different medical schools?

Thanks

Scottish Ambulance Technician (Application 2013)

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 11:35 AM PDT

Hi All,

First time poster so I apologize if i'm about to repeat things that have already been brought up & posted.

I'm looking for some information and support as regards to the application process to become an Ambulance Tech.

I've always liked working with people but after years of working in an office I began to realize I wasn't happy and i wanted to go out and do something worthwhile. A few years back I got paid off from where I worked and I made a decision to change careers and do something new! after a few months of searching I eventually got a job as a support worker which i began to realize was very me. Being able to work and care for people made me feel even more passionate about helping people so I thought about applying to the police but after talking to a few people I know I decided not to go down that path and I was at a dead as to where to go. The thought of being a paramedic did cross my mind but I thought I would need to be better qualified to do that until someone mentioned starting out as a tech which made me think. So I download an application form and filled it in.

I applied at the start of Jan (This Year) but i've not heard anything back from the service yet and i'm starting to think I've not been accepted? I'm still holding out hope that I might hear something back but the longer I wait i'm thinking not. What's the time scale for application feedback? I E-Mailed yesterday to ask what the progress of my application was (I hope this didn't come across as being cheeky?)

I have my provisional C1 licence and I've looked into training centers to sit my driving but it's just the cost of it just now that's stopping me. Could this be a possible cause for not being accepted? I noticed a lot of driver training centers offer an ambulance course but its the face of £1000 but I'm thinking that if i just do the standard C1 course I would be ok?

I was hopping that my recent experience in care would help my application but i'm thinking that I may need to work for a few more years to get experience before I'm at a stage where I would be able to be a tech?

Every time I see a Paramedic or Tech now I get so determined to do it and i know this would be something I would love to be able to do. I just hope i'm going about my application the correct way.

If anyone was able to offer any hints or tips to the application process i would be so grateful.

Thanks
S
