Posted: 04 Mar 2013 10:11 AM PST Hi So I have a 'how long is a piece of string?' question. I am on the waiting list position no.16. Having been told that information I still feel none the wiser. I guess in April when SGUL have firm choices from everyone then I may hear more. Does anyone have any experience to say whether i'm in a likely/unlikely position to start the course this year? I feel quite uncomfortable in such a state of uncertainty! |
UKCAT/GAMSAT/Work Experience Timing Questions Posted: 04 Mar 2013 08:28 AM PST Hi, I am a mature student who is interested in applying for a spot on a GEP course, preferably submitting the application this autumn and preferably located in London. I have an undergraduate degree in a non-science field from the United States (GPA 3.5) and an MSc from a UK university (conferred with distinction) in a non-science field. I am employed full time at the moment. I have been volunteering for the past ten years for a gay men's health charity in London (and even had a stint on the board) but most of the work I've been doing is media-programme related and not 'hands-on'. For various reasons related to my current job, I have no free time in evenings or weekends until around 1 June. Some of the GEP programmes I am looking at require the UKCAT, others require the GAMSAT. My natural science is a bit rusty, and I've read that it take a few months of revision to get up to speed on these tests. I am happy to do this. I have registered with St John's Ambulance to be a volunteer but because of the above-mentioned work commitments I have delayed the training until after 1 June as well. My questions are these: - Is revising for the GAMSAT, the UKCAT and working with SJA too much to do over the course of the summer? Am I taking on too much? Is there a lot of overlap between GAMSAT and UKCAT preparation? - I also have very little work/shadowing experience and would need to gain some before applying, or interview at least. Would trying to organise this be taking on too much as well? I guess I am concerned that I am rushing things and trying to cram too much into too little time. I have considered waiting another year and applying for GEP programmes in the autumn of 2014 after I have had a little bit of time to get everything settled, but I do not want to pass up a good opportunity right now if I can avoid it. What would you do in my situation? Many thanks for any and all advice. |
