Many children with congenital heart defects now live to adulthood, and, perhaps not surprisingly, adult hospital admissions for congenital heart problems nearly doubled over a 12-year span, a national analysis determined.
From January 1998 through June 2004, there were 331,162 hospital admissions for patients over 18 with congenital heart disease, according to Jared M. O'Leary, MD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and colleagues. FULL STORY»
Tool May Predict Statin Benefits
A web-based calculator may enable clinicians to predict gains in an asymptomatic patient's life expectancy from starting statin therapy, a modeling study demonstrated.
A simulation showed that among individuals 55 and older who had no history of cardiovascular disease, starting statin therapy would be expected to increase total life expectancy by an average of 0.3 years and cardiovascular disease-free life expectancy by 0.7 years, according to M.G.
