Medical Students with Children...

Posted: 21 Apr 2013 10:17 PM PDT

I'm hoping to apply and gain for 2015 entry. I'm currently 27 and my fiancé is 36 and both of us are very broody! We could hold off children until after medical school but I'm wondering if we can have one beforehand...my research into finances so far is making it unlikely. I'm not sure i could afford £300 a week for a nursery place.

For those of you who have children, could you give me an idea of how you manage (or if you havent started, how you intend to manage?) - nursery places, crèches, family help (this would be impossible) and also what the study timetable is like? I understand you get most Wednesday afternoons off (I suppose this saves half a days nursery fees at least).

Do you have to work weekends much (I don't mean study - clinical placements etc)

We wouldn't be able to get child tax credit etc because of my fiances income - although SLC assure me the grant (£148) is non income assessed. However even with that, I'm struggling to see how we can afford childcare costs.

Any information/advice much appreciated! Thanks
