In case you missed it, be sure to read this Sunday New York Times magazine piece

How well did these stories address our 10 criteria?
*
Implanted Device May Predict Epilepsy Seizures [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001bXT87yfCjEnMw4GgzPypoUMmAVqJiP1U6nJECvP_0_2kNpCmlO-bGu57guXzUbq5K4sJSsOfGYTMg2mbGpoLlMOFaIJMYs51Ey0qw_rt8eGTsxB-BMBrNSm1V2rOwcwOJJKtmo1QY8-Ot66afMvC3a60rXpMr-kQ9xitxCoh8odPlNFi3hvkc7ZS7trju1nyhLhDfhLZd5pc9Xjt9w2N9dDy3sNXjrzA]
We appreciate how the story placed appropriate caveats up high in the first and
second sentences of the story, and followed that with cautious language from both
the author ("We just wanted to see if this is feasible...") and an independent
expert. Not a bad model for how to report on research looking at new devices in
small studies.
* Newly Discovered Hormone Could Yield New Treatment for Diabets [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001bXT87yfCjEkHX32eQ5sHVZ9nGjyKQHItwk-96Nin4s9GyJHsRCUFzUL6zC-EnTQHEkg17dftlbJLOLjc4pMlyywy365u8TOfUuzCYt5yJnkc0jLIRaQ2wWqFwnsFcsehdqiG7NogranWOHEM2Hi6_NswXbWU4k7EZu8ERSkHO3jzfQQH4lYaJfQ6V36QkotclNqf8w4ZpBj8b7RXjpXTrg==]
If you skim too quickly, you'll miss that this "breakthrough" in type 2 diabetes
research came from a study of mice - not humans. The story may have overstated
the promise of bench research.
