Shutting down for June
This will be the only weekly digest we'll send out this month. We won't publish
much in June because of travels, including giving talks at:
* the International Shared Decision Making conference [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMBZYTUQ_HfZkD2-aarqZ5NhjeZjIV632eyla6en8shIUFjfO23Ruxr1ylKrDpmSCIHZyez4efXCOrc4UPACk-4aR5dyRPpP650ZfyiGNWHWgL1FqfnmwDjdc9etkkEnDJMlwCJzVrim7g==]in
Lima, Peru
* the World Conference of Science Journalists [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMCGLCFyuux8uXDCDEW_5k6s_mG2hTmtp0M46l2BpU7JZAaDBn73AIcxwqBz5OqTDKNf4M-cvp3d2OzQH9IgDq7ap6SDO7C0qUNSyrPuzrVQp3SE0HUxngN_ZYrQ6eUZ4Hr-R0rsI0LUW0i_axccHHSjaNltENxA4b-oo1PQx4KjTzzJCvYYfQ4g]
in Helsinki, Finland
Two medical arms race issues popped up again this week - as they do, increasingly.
(Johns Hopkins Medicine was mentioned in both.)
* hammer [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMBD6TekSxfIMY3w97W2kEyMnHwAAvf88m2e5uRhDwXoy-aMbyXvMLvoF9ZVf_LqAJRt22XS3wuqA-iu1xbKIEyC6Zq2VE3ad1QsGE5c45fnygUW8wDuQCxLgYvk8_avpZydbInpyIRcRo-TAX473ixF8I-_PAPyvbMahmATn23ke3nTGxOHyDsKZmmvgAzg5ibIYNuccPnEqg==]
The old saying, "To a man with a new hammer, everything looks like a nail," comes
into play as hospitals small and big promote "firsts" with the use of their robotic
surgery systems [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMBD6TekSxfIMY3w97W2kEyMnHwAAvf88m2e5uRhDwXoy-aMbyXvMLvoF9ZVf_LqAJRt22XS3wuqA-iu1xbKIEyC6Zq2VE3ad1QsGE5c45fnygUW8wDuQCxLgYvk8_avpZydbInpyIRcRo-TAX473ixF8I-_PAPyvbMahmATn23ke3nTGxOHyDsKZmmvgAzg5ibIYNuccPnEqg==].
* News of two DC hospitals building proton beam therapy facilities within 3 miles
of each other, competing with another in Baltimore 40 miles away [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMBD6TekSxfIMY3w97W2kEyMnHwAAvf88m2e5uRhDwXoy-aMbyXvMLvoF9ZVf_LqAJRt22XS3wuqA-iu1xbKIEyC6Zq2VE3ad1QsGE5c45fnygUW8wDuQCxLgYvk8_avpZydbInpyIRcRo-TAX473ixF8I-_PAPyvbMahmATn23ke3nTGxOHyDsKZmmvgAzg5ibIYNuccPnEqg==].
"Here they go again," wrote an ex-CEO of a Boston medical center.
JAMA Internal Medicine published 5 articles on shared decision-making (SDM). [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMBhkVwxSpyEdHa_rQyYmhPQ4NGNRYF5r7ERG5NDtfALGqmtDq-Ab6xgKY2Ru8tAUOxEz8dSw5_WHEvsJ99Ay8IBQuOCthwJ5g9TJpkJ_Mg1db1cBxfe5K6e8_kguor0O_WEffG7ZzbMFTpA8a2k3eOxk65AkY0DWf3SzNRNhNe7Ri92zWg4UVALrX06hO4Tsgrspi3sHAKjxgbYfa2TWEy6EasR0HrnLep_vkt_puORxyCT8tLG_2tcetp-RLboSqI=]
They received relatively little news attention. The coverage that did occur focused
almost exclusively on a paper claiming SDM raised costs. On Facebook, Mayo Clinic's
Dr. Victor Montori wrote:
"SDM can increase costs. Not a problem. This study cannot show that. A survey
about SDM is to patients like a survey about vacationing on the moon. Some people
can answer the question but most will have to imagine what the hell they are asking
about because they have never experienced it. "
Two shared decision-making - and cost - issues that usually receive little attention
got some:
* The New York Times piece, " The $2.7 Trillion Medical Bill: Colonoscopies Explain
Why U.S. Leads the World in Health Expenditures. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMB8uDN0DF5maou8lyE4ajPo0uosaahQSGF91NBGGBwuuQrcg7YEOZRAo699UamgGG7P_R0X6dETNFFQ6OtXgfE5Uos375g98KlB0edLCZIF3bisKwphG45XEojSUefSsckK6E8n2geAL4ZByX457nhsZziezHLx4YNgqjk0PhEt1QYf6bNU6ts0q_KOsuIuu_WqNb1AHeGfP9gaciVuOLXUGCVHPEpd2woYt7DB25Np-hRiZUQkv4E6zLfwZDbHa8IdR7QVGMzTzQ==]"
* And Dr. Iona Heath wrote about "Waste and Harm in the Treatment of Mild Hypertension
[http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMAAJMf2bRWY_Pq3OcwY91zK0KhH0WBRtk1-yU4BGSQqRKNLMd5AXadIr92qErb8NwqF5A6Gopucs2_XSk1-uQYyN6fBQO6HP7TSRqSSE1bgSKo8WESA5UhFncDVxf44DRpjIWEPWkdbztQx2UpDVKXesvGsiYBGSgFom7FVA1HfzUV5veuilUyeVq4uexJbw6td1oGvEciDNBKUu7lqu0NjSAutPgzfS_YEgYNk_T_p1Foi8Qm1XLjx]."
Another over-treatment concern: Editors of the journal PLoS Medicine wrote,
"The Paradox of Mental Health: Over-treatment and Under-recognition. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMDDWkhU0EbPxNdODtfXdMn7BmbsjeuBG6jAAvrGeseH5M0AnJ2G1Leye6lte2yBkXm-nFtjOH8Xw2guhYDkntBlHdfb5S2XidELHpxw5g8yjCC0G-qcrXynvcwFF1DdXM9Oql1CLpUfdKhkOHkhr03tKYMF43fq-mS8jaXPN_iGyuDYB2ewX2ALxsFI0yoRJu0O7uCHWgAalHQIjddw5IIEkwplNzTlhSNqwrD4mYk1u5O6TPFNoBrn5zm53FKwl_U=]"
And science journalist Ed Yong posted a "Guide for Scientists on Giving Comments
to Journalists [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMD6yUTurLJNdWbYy9LKO4qQ2MaT1rYWC7UBesZzj3dQZ6rWFfgsF392TXrRVw47G0ch0m0Cr2gdjP5uGQa0x8Wzc_bh3Ge-FgyTZXBhmkejem599eku2s7mzavjmhCquP4Kmo1oIj9LiHmR553q7fAkgkxX2E4Ts4nM0mt3ttxTGxcsxonu_A5cfPm0KcPe2wfxb5mSkz499v4a6L-2t5uUDobCSuvFL4c=]."
Good stuff.

We'll email you again in July, although our fate changes then as our 8-years of
funding from the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation ends. We have no replacement
funding in place yet. We don't want to end this work and will keep you posted on
our progress.
Thanks for your interest and support.

New drugs improve options for melanoma patients [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001TwSyBDCybMAbaynByxJ9V3JgvVLTPKcVReeg_RqnW2jONyZgsD7_i_b3BmBcY7KZ1ERJ-IY5En419o_vOR5yMqknZEpWI1U2Z6WNzbJcVOMoh9UczTAj5_eHaqcMAn5PE2p8w7mbjdH2utC21xJKBAsKnWyFxJLfz89AT4Rd0EZN7bExvhAEYzlN4URTHnrdWWwKN4DGMMvvjz7r73F0Gg==]
It's difficult to do an overview of melanoma drug research in a relatively brief
story. But this story did a solid job, demonstrating how to present context and
broad perspective even in advance coverage of big meetings like the American Society
of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting.
