When do we need reference from academic referee by? Posted: 26 Sep 2013 03:18 PM PDT Hi! Stupid question here... I am applying for 2014 entry and I am wondering if I need to get the reference from my referee by 15 Oct, or do I only need to get my referee to accept my invitation as my referee by 15 Oct? Thanks a lot! :D
Posted: 26 Sep 2013 11:19 AM PDT Top of the day to you, ladies and gents. My name is David and, unfortunately, I live in Lithuania. Although Lithuania is in the EU, I decided that it would truly be amazing to study over the border in the UK. I am finishing school next year. Only recently have I started looking for info about the enrollment and, as far as I can see, almost all free medical universities are in Scotland. In fact, I'd love to get into the University of Dundee or Glasgow, but, apparently, both of them need me to sit the UKCAT. Now the thing is, I am not a native speaker. What that means is that, although my English is not that bad, i guess I still fall behind the native English students. Also, I have only basic knowledge of math terms in English, as I was learning math in my native language. Now I'll cut the intro and get straight to the question: is it possible for me to get the grades as high as the English students get? I can read fine in English (I've even read "Hamlet" with little trouble) and my math is quite above average, but is it really possible to get the good grades? Also, will I be rated just like the English students, or the universities cut some slack to the students from overseas?
Best way to do the DA section? Posted: 26 Sep 2013 10:56 AM PDT Do you write down the whole code or do you just pick out key codes? i was writing them all out and getting a most of them right but never finishing the full section (2 or 3 questions short) my girlfriend comes along picks out key bit and get's nearly full marks in half the time...? i was under the impression all the material emphasised write out the full code.... Which way did you all do DA?
FPAS points for extracurricular? Posted: 26 Sep 2013 08:29 AM PDT Hello friends, I am a medical student currently doing my intercalated Bsc degree. During this year, I believe I will have the most free time than any other year, so I want to use this free time purposefully and to start immediately. One of ways I can use such time to great effect is to do things that can help me gain points for my FPAS application and/or help improve my application and interview prospects. My questions are: 1) Does teaching/ lecturing medical students in the lower years count for much? Even if you've only lectured a couple of times? I don't expect any points but can it be something you mention in the application and maybe something to talk about in the interview? 2) Does being part of a committee such as a top teaching committee organised by students of the medical student count for much? 3) Does being head/president of a club/society help? Even if it's a very mundane society like "the hat society"? 4) What do you recommend I should do now to further my application and enable me to talk about during an interview? I am fully aware that publications help (already expecting one) and also winning prizes, what about attending conferences? Teaching? Also, anything else I can do to get points? 5) I'm still unsure about what speciality I'm interested in but I enjoy neurology a lot, should I be going to conferences, joining societies and events specific to neurology to help further my cause? Will it be a hot topic of discussion during an interview, "What have I done to demonstrate interest in this field of medicine?"? Apologies for the various questions. I just feel like I would be missing out if I didn't make every effort to help improve my chances in the future. Anybody who has applied or are still applying and in their head are saying "I wish I had done that when I could have"?. Wise words of advice and recommendations are graciously welcomed. Thank you, Eczy
