FDA has made significant progress in assuring that critical medicines are readily available, and is determined to do even more to make sure that drug shortages do not interfere with patients' access to critical medications.
The agency has released a strategic plan that outlines the tools available to prevent or resolve a shortage and details long-term solutions. And FDA has issued a proposed rule requiring manufacturers of certain medically important drugs to give FDA notice if they intend to discontinue making a drug or learn of manufacturing problems that are likely to affect supply.
