Any Advice Will be Appreciated

Posted: 07 Jun 2014 01:33 AM PDT

So, for a bit of background, I'm 28 and completed my BSc. in Biomedical Science in 2009 (2:1). Following that, I decided to do an MSc in Immunology (2009-2010) and graduated with a distinction. I am currently in the writing up year of my PhD.

Now, I really really want to study medicine, as many of you here, I have nursed this idea for years and years growing up as a young girl but as I did not manage to get in first time round.... slowly but surely I began to convince myself maybe medicine was not for me. Dont get me wrong, I REALLY enjoy research but I know where my heart is. Over the past few months, I've had time to reflect and reading this forum I am more convinced than ever that its never too late and I may be actually able to do this!

Now to the crux of the matter,
1. I have just registered for the UKCAT for the end of August for 2015 entry. In the mean time, I'm hoping to work as a postdoc until then. The mini-qualm here is that most post docs have a 2-3 year contract attached to them. Is it even possible to leave the contract after one year presuming I get a job in Sept 2014 and I get a place at med school?

2. It is very likely that I will be getting married withng the next 2-4 years and if my application is successful, I will be in med school then. I know priorities may change by then but Ive always wanted to have a baby within the first year of marriage. So, this will mean, I may be in med school with a baby! How realistic is this?

3. Finally, the work experience bit bothers me a lot because I dont think I have enough. The ony work experiences I have is (a) 1 year working as a care home assitant during my undergrad so that was what? 2006/2007..a loong time ago! (b) I dont think it counts for anything but one year unpaid placement at a reference lab (for my placement year).
My question is, with my experience as a researcher and with my qualifications, do I still need more work experience? Does the one year in a care home in 2006 count for anything?
If it doesnt, is it too late to start looking for a GP shadowing or voluntary work experience before my application in September? If so, what lenghts of time would you recommend I'll need for a potentially successful application?
I know its quite a lenghty post but wil appreciate any anwers posted.

Thank you!!!!

Campbell Harris and 24+ learning loans

Posted: 06 Jun 2014 07:06 PM PDT

Hi all,

I am looking to study A levels full time (3 in a year), am based in London and am over 24. From looking into it, there are very few places that actually cater for full time A levels for mature students (even less for evenings!), so the far and away leader is Campbell Harris in Kensington. For your awareness, I have tried distance learning before, and it is not for me - I need human contact!!

I have engaged with them, and they seem happy to take me on, but they are expensive. Too expensive for me to afford. There is hope in that there is the 24+ learning loan available, for which I am eligible, but I want to know in advance if this is something that anyone has done before.

So, is there anyone who has used a 24+ loan to study at Campbell Harris? If not, can you suggest any other colleges that do full time mature study which would accept this loan?

Thanks for your help!
