BMAT without science A-Levels

Posted: 02 Jun 2014 01:29 PM PDT

Hi guys,

Just to give you a bit of background, I am on a gap year having finished my A Levels in arts and humanities subjects, so I have decided to do an A2M course this Sep and apply to the normal 5 year courses.

I have emailed around all the unis to check and clarify things, but one I am really keen on is BSMS. They've been fantastic at getting back to me, I love the city and of course cadaver dissection is a bit of a bonus.

They have recently made the BMAT a requirement, which means I will be expected, from an arts background, to sit the BMAT. I wanted to see if any fellow applicants or medics have any advice as to whether it is a wise move without the science background or to give me some idea to how much preparation would be needed.

Thanks in advance !

Am I unlikely to get an interview with these scores?

Hi there,

I have read the scoring of applications for GEM applicants for 2014. I am worried there is no point for me to apply or even sit the UKCAT because of my poor scores:

I got 10 GCSE's, 5 Bs and 5 Cs (English Lit&Lang and Maths = B, Science =CC). This gives me a score of 0 for section 1.1.

For my A Levels I did all arts subjects and scored ABB, which gives me a score of 3 for section 1.2.0.

For my degree I did a BSc in Psychology and got a 2.1. I don't know if they count this subject as a science or not. I also have an MSc in Health Psychology but it doesn't seem to take this into account anywhere. I would therefore either score 4 or 2 in section 1.3 (depending on whether they view Psychology as a science subject).

I have 3 years of paid experience as a healthcare assistant and research assistant but they don't appear to score this in the preliminary stages.

I haven't sat the UKCAT yet and I am wondering is there any point? Even if I scored top marks of 10 in the UKCAT section I would still only have a score of 17/25... or possibly 15/25 depending on how they score my degree. Also there's no way I will score 10/10 for the UKCAT... Am I wasting my time? They won't even read my personal statement with these scores I am guessing??

Honest chances

Hello everyone,

I'm sure there are hundreds of posts like this, but I'd really appreciate some insight from others.

I'm a 25 year old graduate with a 2.1 law degree from Edinburgh. I have AAB at A-level with no sciences and 2A*,7A,B,C at GCSE. All my sciences were single award A's and A*'s. A law degree is fantastic for human reasoning, ethics and decision making too.

I've been working in brewing for 3 years, which utilises a lot of biology and chemistry so I've been actively pursuing a career in science since graduation. However I'm finding it a bit stagnated and I need something more mentally stimulating, and I've been considering med school very seriously for about the past year.

I forsee the UKCAT as being more to my strengths than the GAMSAT, I also can't really afford the GAMSAT at the moment. However if it would help my chances I would give it my best shot.

I don't have much formal work experience in a medical setting (2 weeks at school), but I've cared for my very unwell father for the past 4 years and as such have learned a lot from being a caregiver (as my mother is a nurse) as well as from being within a clinical setting with him in hospital. I don't know how far this would contribute or if all experience has to be strictly formal. I also work shifts and long hours, so it is hard to commit to work experience when my schedule is constantly changing, as you inevitably end up letting people down.

So my biggest question is, do you think I stand a chance at GEM? I do intend to get more shadowing experience even if I need to take a holiday from work to do so.

Thanks a lot!

Help! Anyone!
I have a 2:2 degree (non-science) and the last time I did any science subject was GCSE level...14 years ago!!! Yes I will be 30 years old this year...And it has taken me this long to have made the decision to go ahead and study Medicine. I can only go to St Georges, cause they accept my degree & can't move my husband & kids from here & there is just something about it that I like. I really want to start the course next year 2015, as time is not on my side, but I have 3 months to study for the GAMSAT 2014, I hear people saying they didn't study or studied for 6 months straight 4-12hrs a day & still passed...So what do I do? Where do I start? What literature is best? And am I just pushing myself too much to sit the 2014 exam? Would it be advisable to sit next year 2015 instead? Help anyone!

Hello folks,

Is anyone in Somerset, Bristol, Bath or even Devon interested in or in need of a GAMSAT study buddy?

I have been revising for the exam coming up this September and would love to meet up periodically with someone or a group of people who are in a similar position.

PM me if you are interested and we can go from there.

Cheers
