| Living cost loan confusion for GEM Posted: 19 Jul 2014 07:31 AM PDT Hello. Sorry to create a whole thread just for this question, but the living cost loan has me bamboozled. So I understand that in the 1st year, maximum living cost loan is up to 5,555 (outside London but in England - which is where I'm looking). Simple enough. However, on the student finance.gov.uk website, I can get a maximum of only 3,862 on their calculator. I've tinkered with it in many different ways - giving us 0 income, differnet types of dependents, etc, living at home and not living with parents - and I still can't get the darn thing to shift anywhere above 3,862. My actual circumstances are that I have a wife and 2 young children, plan to be living away from home in Derby. I need some assurances that we would be getting the maximum or close to the maximum living cost loan, and this calculator thing scares me. It's a whole 1,693 less than the maximum and I have no idea why. Is it just because this calculator gives only a rough estimate? Please help shed any light if you can. Many thanks.
