Anatomy or Physiology?

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 02:57 PM PDT

Hello,

I am a student of architecture and I need to learn something about human body for my research.
I need to know the different systems of body and their organs.I want to learn how each organ and system works and also how they work together.

At this point I need your guides. I will thank to you if you help me with below questions:

1. Do I have to start with anatomy or physiology?
2. Is anatomy a prerequisites for physiology?
3. Are these books "Moore, Clinically Oriented Anatomy" and "Gray's Anatomy for Students" about PURE anatomy or anatomy and physiology?
4. Is there any book which touches both anatomy and physiology in at a same time?
5. Do you know any better book to suggest me?

I thank you all so much in advance.

GEM 2016: Am I on the right path?

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 12:55 PM PDT

Hey,

Last year, I began contemplating whether to apply for GEM, 2016 entry. After much deliberation and overcoming a number of fears regarding the application process (mainly rejection) - I've decided to give it a shot.

In a few weeks, I'll be beginning my second year of university.

My academic stats are:
GCSE - 11 A-C
A-levels - AACb (Biology, History, Chemistry and Geography)
Degree (Biomedical Sciences) - First year - 2:1

With the guidance of some Student Room members last year, I managed to create a list of goals I have been working towards in order to become a strong applicant, this includes:

Volunteering - Prior to considering applying to GEM I had already undertaken a varied and extensive amount of volunteering - and this still continues.

Experience - I have recently began working as an HCA at a local hospital. I also hope to shadow a doctor, or other healthcare professional, sometime in the following academic year.

Extra curricular - I play a sport at university level and I am currently president of one of the largest societies at my university

Entrance exams - I am still undecided as to where I will apply, but I do have a shortlist of sorts (I'll list it below). I plan to begin preparing for the respective entrance exams once I start university, as I need as much time as possible and I would prefer to do it slowly over a long period as I am truly terrified of them. At this moment in time it is likely I will be sitting the UKCAT and GAMSAT next year.

Getting a 2:1/1st - I'm really happy with the grade I achieved in first year, especially when I consider how little I focused on my studies and how much I was involved with the social side of uni. However, with that being said, I did not push myself whatsoever and I am now going to try my best to work towards a first - I believe I owe it to myself as I really do love my degree despite it being quite challenging.

Personal statement - I must admit that I haven't really given this much thought. I plan to start working on it either late term 2 or early term 3, this will allow me to take my time with it, build up some knowledge of my job and also to take full of advantage of my university careers service.

---
Shortlist-ish:
St Georges + Nottingham (GAMSAT)
Kings College, Newcastle, Southhampton and Warwick (UKCAT)

*I was also considering Oxford/Cambridge but I believe my GCSEs and A-levels are relatively poor. Especially the C in A-level chemistry (it has really limited the medical schools to which I can apply - and even then, I'm still at a disadvantage). I do have mitigating circumstances regarding my A-levels but I don't want to include them in my application whatsoever, everyone has struggles at one time or the other. I plan to contact Oxbridge's respective admissions team in the near future to confirm that I will be a weak applicant.

---

Even if I do get straight rejections, something which I know is very possible, at least I know I gave it a go. Everyday I want to study medicine more, my job makes me even more eager! I will be the first to admit that I'm not particularly intelligent but I'm praying that my sheer determination will help me get an interview.

I was wondering if anyone had any further advice for me and to ensure I am going about this correctly?

What score would I of gotten?

Okay so I have just started preparing and I went straight into a practice test from the official UKCAT website and got;

VR 24/44
QR 12/36
AR 22/55
DA 16/28
SJ 31/67

I understand I haven't done amazingly... what I want to know is what score I would get in each section from 300-900 and how do they scale it?
