Is medicine a good choice for me? Posted: 15 Aug 2014 12:39 PM PDT Hi, Firstly, I am unsure if this post is in the right thread or not ( I only just joined the site.) Secondly, I am a fifth year student in Scotland just about to start my highers ( Chemistry, Maths, Human Biology, English and Art.) My results from my nationals ( approximate GCSE equivalents ) were all A's so I think I should be capable of meeting the academic requirements for studying medicine. I have been thinking about doing medicine for a while now and have read a lot about it but I wanted to hear from some people who were studying medicine/in the medical profession. However, I am unsure of whether it is the right career choice for me to follow. I have a strong interest in science and love learning, so Medicine appeals as it would mean I can keep learning my whole life. I also want to help people where I can and try and have a positive impact on the world - I don't want to grow old and feel that I have not achieved anything. My worry is that I am not sympathetic or caring enough to work in a job where I have to care for people. It's not that I don't care, more that I'm just not the touchy feely type. So I can work with people and communicate with them but I worry that if I was treating someone they would not feel comfortable or reassured - but are these skills that can be gained? Basically, I'd appreciate any and all advice for someone considering medicine - I'd like a realistic idea of what it's like to be in this profession and whether it's something I'd be good at before I reach the point of applying. Thank you for reading, :) |
