Eligibility for a medicine degree - which route to take?

Posted: 18 Sep 2014 01:40 PM PDT

I am currently doing a degree in Human Sciences and got all A*'s and A's for GCSE and ABB (French, biology and English lit – only a few UMS off A's) in my A-levels and grade C in A's chemistry and a D in maths. As I had extenuating circumstances (depression) when I took my A2's I took a third year and resat 2 exams pushing my grades up to 3A's and I studied A-level Psychology in a year getting an A* at the end.

What are my options for medicine?

Can I just apply to graduate entry medicine?

Or can I apply for the 5yr course – as I would have to get my A-level in chemistry could I do this via distance learning/college to do this – but it is not within 2 years of A-level so is it not possible? Also how would my resits (i.e. A-levels in 3 years) affect my chances of getting into a 5 year course.

Would I be eligible for an access course or not if I complete my degree?

Or I could not finish my degree and apply to 6-year medicine with foundation course as i presume I could not do this after my degree.

Which option do you think would be best?

Sorry for such a long entry. :)

The phasing out of graduate medicine??

I have heard from a a few sources including a commentor from a thread on TSR - I can't remember which though about the possible closing of gradate entry medicine so the 4 year accelerated degree would no longer be an option. I am about to go into my 2nd year of a 4yr degree and am thinking about medicine as a possible career and which the lengthening of Imperial extending their degree to a 5 year course and Leicester no longer running theres - I was wondering whether it may be possible that by the time I come to apply in 3/4 years will graduate entry medicine have been phasing out.

A bit worried. What does my profile need? GEP applicant 2016-entry

Here's my info/profile:

I'm in the third year of a Business Management degree at Sheffield University and have been working in a nursing home as a care assistant at weekends since February 2014. I've also been a Samaritans volunteer for a year and have had paid work experience in an unrelated field for a year before attending university.

I've been looking at the profiles (on TSR, Reddit etc.) of a few of the people who've been rejected and it's frightening and disheartening, to be honest. I'll be applying for 2016 entry and was wondering what you guys think it would be useful to do over the next year based on your experiences. What would you do if you had a year?

By the way, I'm 23 years old and will be applying for the first time to 'any discipline' courses like the one at Newcastle (I'm aware of the UKCAT score needed)
