Dear UDI subscribers,
On Dec. 9, 2014 the FDA is co-hosting a meeting with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and The Pew Charitable Trusts on the implementation of Unique Device Identifiers in health care settings. Please see below for more information and registration instructions.
Realizing the Benefits of the Unique Device
Identifier in Health Care
An event co-hosted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,
the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and The Pew Charitable Trusts
Under new federal regulations, the highest-risk medical devices—such as cardiac valves and artificial hips—now have new identifying codes to more easily track products and detect problems. Please join FDA, ONC, and The Pew Charitable Trusts on December 9 in Washington, D.C. for a discussion on the benefits and challenges of integrating these codes, called unique device identifiers (UDI), into clinical care, registries, the supply chain, and other facets of health care delivery.
The UDI system will provide each medical device with a code corresponding to its make and model to facilitate recalls, enhance care coordination among clinicians, and improve the data available on device safety and effectiveness. This conference—intended for hospital executives, clinicians, software vendors, electronic standards developers, and others interested in the UDI system—will explore the potential uses of this new tool and identify key next steps to ensure its adoption.
Specific sessions will focus on:
- The standards that are needed to ensure UDI information can be stored and shared throughout the health care system;
- Ways that UDI adoption can benefit supply chain and materials management systems; and
- How UDI capture in medical records and other data systems can improve patient care and workflow efficiency.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Karen DeSalvo, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology
- Jeff Shuren, Director, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, FDA
- Jaime Ferguson, Vice President of Health Information Technology Strategy and Policy, Kaiser Permanente
- David Bates, Senior Vice President for Quality and Safety, Brigham and Women’s Hospital
- Stuart Kilpinen, Executive Director of National Contracting, Aetna
A draft agenda with additional confirmed speakers is now available. Space is limited, so register today.
