Ultrasonic fetal scanning is generally considered a safe medical procedure, but its use for non-medical purposes raises concerns.
The long-term effects of tissue heating and the small bubbles that can develop in tissues are not known. Therefore, ultrasound scans should be reserved for times when there is a medical need, based on a prescription, and performed by appropriately-trained operators.
