Demographic Indications in Atrial Fibrillation

In white males, the cumulative risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) by age 80 is 21%.1 While white males may be the most common sufferers of AF; other patient groups have substantially different demographics for AF and AF risks. Awareness of these key differences may allow for a safer, effective, and personalized approach to the management of this disorder.

For women, the cumulative risk for AF (17%) is slightly lower than for males (21%).2 However, according to 2 recent studies of note, AF is significantly more dangerous for women compared with men.

Michelena et al found that mortality for women with AF is 2.5 times greater than that for men. Women with AF also had a higher risk of stroke compared with their male counterparts (1.6 times greater). Interestingly, women also derived the greatest benefit from anticoagulation in AF (relative risk for stroke 0.4 versus 0.6 for men).2

Find out what other populations are at a higher risk of AF.
