After some much-needed advice!

Posted: 19 Aug 2013 02:33 AM PDT

Hello all,

Finally de-lurking! I have seen many posts like this in recent weeks from mature student hopefuls, so I thought I would join the fray in the hope that I may receive some much-needed advice from you guys, as well as maybe helping people in a similar position to me.

I am a recent arts graduate, with 2:1 from a top UK University, decent GCSEs and A Levels, albeit with no emphasis on science. I have been living in Asia for nearly a year now due to my partner getting relocated here for work, and am currently working with children as an art teacher. Despite not really wanting to move out here (in my ideal world, I would still be in the UK trying to get experience as a HCA) I am enjoying the challenges of living abroad, and finding working with children very fulfilling and rewarding to the point where it is even making me think about a career in Paediatrics, something I had not considered before.

Medicine has always interested me, however I never thought that I was really 'good' enough or 'cut out' for it, so in my naive youth, decided to pursue other interests. Now older and wiser, I desperately want to study Medicine and have a career as a doctor, and after doing extensive research into GEM (an option I only found about a year ago) I have decided to give it a shot. I have found this forum incredibly useful and inspirational, and it has really helped me in realising that it IS possible to achieve a goal, no matter how late you think you might be at trying to achieve it.

I have a few questions regarding the entry requirements to GEM courses, that I hope you kind people may be able to answer:

Firstly, here in Hong Kong, it is possible to study Edexcel A Level Bio and Chem without needing to return to the UK to take the practical examinations (here, those modules are replaced by further written exams). My question is, is it worth taking these A Levels to prove myself academically when the Universities I will be applying to don't even require them (Newcastle, Nottingham, SGUL and Warwick), or should I just self-study the necessary science knowledge to be able to sit the GAMSAT (for Notts and SGUL). Have any of you been in this situation? What do the universities prefer?

Secondly, as well as organising some shadowing experience with family friends in the UK, I am also trying to get some volunteer work in a healthcare setting out here, however as a non-Cantonese speaker this has proved difficult so far. I anticipate moving back to the UK towards the end of next year, so will probably be applying for 2015 entry. I would like to know if a year's volunteer work in a healthcare setting (at perhaps 1-2 days a week) as well as shadowing would be considered as enough experience for my chosen Universities?

Sorry for the long post! I just can't seem to find the answers to these questions anywhere, and haven't yet come across anyone in my current position. What a long process this Medical School application lark is.

Thanks for reading.

Two scales-two different results

Posted: 17 Aug 2013 07:41 AM PDT

Hello
I've a unusual question to you.. I've a some medical project to do and I must use a scales.
Actually I use two type of scales, one is a brand new scales - something like this: http://www.torbalscales.com/laboratory-balances.html while second scales has a few years but still works very well.
Unfortunately from the beginning I receive two different results, so my question is: what can interfere on it, I mean which factor could be the cause of that. Any idea will be welcomed?
