Recent graduate wanting to study medicine in scotland. Any advice? Posted: 22 Aug 2013 03:04 AM PDT Dear All I over the next year ill be preparing myself to make an application to medical school next October. I am in need of some advice. I have a 2:1 in Law and have completed the Legal Practice Course in England. After all of my studies and experience in this field I know the job isn't for me. At university I decided that I would apply to med school so I decided to get some experience under my belt. I volunteered at a hospital near to my university and enjoyed every minute of it. I also spent a week shadowing a local GP and registrar. Everything was going well until.... I out that the NHS bursary didn't apply to students from Scotland. This along with the increase in tuition fees ended all hope of me becoming a doctor in England. After a disappointing year of my life waisted on the LPC I have decided that I will at least try to get into medical school. This is where I need some help. I don't have any science SQA Highers or any A level equivalent and my pervious SQA Higers are terrible (mitigating circumstances and external influences impacted on my academic ability at high school. I had to get an HND and was very lucky to land a place at a good university). I have spoken to one med school in Scotland so far. They have stated that they would consider me without any Chemistry or Biology A levels/Highers as my degree is (apparently) enough. I am yet to contact the other medical schools in Scotland. I am wondering whether someone can give me advice as to what medical schools would be useful to contact? Also could someone recommend a place where I could study Biology and Chemistry though distance learning in England? I would also be interested to get some advice from anyone who has gone though a similar route into medicine. Any words of wisdom will do.
Posted: 21 Aug 2013 09:56 AM PDT Hi, I'm looking to apply for the A100 course but wondering if it is worth applying to Birmingham or not. I have a 1st class degree in biomedical science, however, I only got BBC at A-levels. On their website it states: 'Achieved or predicted first or upper second class degree from a UK-based institution (normally). Very good results from school examinations (in appropriate subjects - see above) are required because you are in competition with school-leavers.', however, I can't find it now, but I read the admissions policy and it stated a preference for a 1st class though as a guide they wanted BBB A-level as a threshold but it may be increased due to applicants. Will my 1st class counteract this BBB stipulation?
Gradmed Reasoning and Strategy Course Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:37 AM PDT Hi there, just wondering if anyone has done the Gradmed Reasoning and Strategy one day course before, if so do you think it was worth it? This is my second attempt at the GAMSAT and have various books, been on a couple of courses and basically revised my butt off, but I just thought that one last course couldn't hurt my chances :-) I guess i'm most interested in the cheat tips e.g. graph interpretation, quick maths cheats without a calculator (i have been revising this) but I'm still slow when plugging figures into equations, so it would be good to know if there are any quicker ways of approaching the questions that could save me some valuable seconds. Let me know if you think it would be worth attending. Cheers, Nicola
Open university tutor as reference? Posted: 21 Aug 2013 05:36 AM PDT Hi all, As the subject says, I'm looking for a reference. We don't have a huge amount of contact with our tutors at the OU, but also I'm self-employed so I don't have a line manager, which leaves me few other options. Do you think I should be cheeky and ask my OU tutor for a reference? Thanks, Sam
