Academic Medicine/Clinician Scientist Posted: 22 Aug 2013 11:18 PM PDT Hi all just want to ask does anyone know how soon can a medics graduate to start doing some research? My thought is that doctors can only start doing some meaningful research during their ST training (as they would have to choose a speciality first to make informed decision). So is it at all possible to go into clinical research right after qualified (after F1/F2) and go on to get a clinical lecturership somewhere down the line? My ideal job will be to spend 80% in research and 20% in clinical works but I guess this only happens when you reach consultant level (and that seems long particulary for us mature student!). Why I ask is that I am very interested in research, but also the medicine side of things of patient contacts, i think being able to do both is the best of both world! (and also having a medical degree makes the research path much more stable in terms of getting grant and things!) So any opinion? |

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 10:09 AM PDT Hi all, I'm planning on sitting the GAMSAT next year (2014) and think revising/working for the GAMSAT over the next year or so will be beneficial. I am starting my revision up now and think it would be a good idea to network and talk to others who are in the same boat. I wouldn't mind setting up a small facebook group on which we can share our resources and help each other out if possible. My facebook link is as follows: https://www.facebook.com/mohammed.ahmed.182940 Feel free to add me and I'll get a group going Look forward to hearing from fellow applicants! Hassan |
Switching specialities: when to drop out of CT1? Posted: 22 Aug 2013 09:40 AM PDT Hi all, Not the most exciting thread but wondering if anyone has any experience or advice relating to a change of specialty. I'm currently a CT1, and even after only a couple of weeks in the job I realise that I've made a massive boo-boo. In hindsight my initial application was poorly judged and based on limited experience. I will of course honour my contract but I was wondering if anyone could advise on whether they know of people leaving specialty training after completion of the first 6 month job to locum for the second 6 months until new jobs start in August? Is it generally frowned upon? Or is it acceptable on the old CV so long as you don't leave them with a gap on their rota (I don't think my leaving would affect the work force significantly in the next rotation). Any ideas/opinions/anecdotes would be gratefully received. Thanks |
