Doc Pay: More $$$ for Primary Care The pay disparity between primary care physicians and their specialty counterparts -- which is often cited as a reason for the shortage of primary care providers -- is lessening, according to a survey.
Primary care physicians reported a first-year guaranteed compensation of $180,000 in 2012, up from $175,000 in 2011. Meanwhile, the average first-year compensation of all specialists combined dropped over that same time from $255,000 to $247,437, according to the MGMA Physician Placement Starting Salary Survey: 2013 Report Based on 2012 Data.
